Variant Surnames

This Wontner surname study also aims to encompass other similar names in terms of spelling (although not necessarily stemming from the same geographical location or historical background).

These include the following names: Wanter, Wantner, Wenter, Wentner, Wonter, Woonter and Woontner.

A brief study on Ancestry UK of variant names reveals the following:

• 474 historical documents with the surname 'Wantner' including 46 census records and 19 military records and 3 immigration records.
• 7,136 historical documents with the surname 'Wenter' including 2,831 census and voting records, 304 military records and 713 immigration records . Again this might include spelling mistakes.
• 360 historical documents for the surname 'Wonter'. This includes 109 census and electoral roll results, 77 immigration records and 16 military records. In a number of cases I suspect these are misspellings of either the Wontner surname or other names, so this needs further investigation.

Additionally according to Facebook:

• there are at least 2 living individuals called Wantner - Sonja Wantner and Elizabeth Wantner
• there are at least 4 living individuals called Wentner - Renate Wentner, Johann Wentner, Petra Wentner and Andreas Wentner
• there are at least 3 living individuals carrying the Woontner surname - this includes Rebecca Woontner, Regina Woontner and Elena Woontner - all from the United States.
• there are are at least 7 living individuals with the surname Wöntner
